Heirs of those killed, people who were wounded and those who were at the school but not physically injured in the shooting were awarded money.
A heart-shaped balloon flies decorating a memorial site outside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Monday, May 30, 2022. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old gunman at the school last week. The families of the students and teachers killed or wounded in the May 24 mass shooting at Robb School School, along with hundreds of others who were on campus at the time of the massacre, recently received a combined $22.3 million in relief funds.
Some received far less. Indeed, people familiar with the matter say there’s been grumbling around town over the size of the cash awards some received. McLaughlin said he had heard complaints, as had a Uvalde attorney who served as chairman of a committee that developed guidelines for the disbursement of the funds.Community activist Jesse Rizo, 51, had talked with a disgruntled recipient. “She has a lot of challenges and expenses,” he said. “It’s a touchy one.
While Gerdes didn’t know the amounts the recipients got, he said he was aware of criticism about the process. “We had to trust that they were going to lead us in a process that would maximize the amount of money to distributed and not drag the process any longer than necessary, but also capture as much in donations as possible,” Gerdes said.
