Multiple Conservative backbenchers have spoken out against fracking after pressure from local voters. Shadow climate change minister, Ed Miliband, said: “Conservative MPs have a simple choice: do they break the manifesto commitments they made to their constituents and allow the Government to impose expensive, unsafe fracking on communities that do not want it, or will they support Labour’s ban on fracking once and for all.
Mr Hunt is working on his “medium-term fiscal plan”, due to be published on 31 October, which will explain how he plans to balance the budget over the next few years. But allies of Ms Truss have criticised her decision to ditch almost all of the economic strategy outlined only last month. The Centre for Policy Studies, a leading centre-right think-tank, warned that the UK is on track to have one of the world’s least competitive tax systems as a result of theIts research director, Tom Clougherty, said: “The new Chancellor is right to prioritise dealing with the current crisis. But looking to the longer term, it is clear that our tax system will be a big hindrance – not a help – to our economic growth prospects.
