💬 Penny Mordaunt: “The Prime Minister is not under a desk... I can assure the House that, with regret, she is not here for a very good reason” ⬇️ A clip from earlier in the Commons debate: Follow the latest:
Addressing Parliament, Mr Hunt said there were “decisions of eye-watering difficulty” to be made, “whether reductions in spending or increases in tax”.
Mr Hunt said: “We need to do more and quickly to give certainty to the markets about our fiscal plans, and show through action and not just words that the United Kingdom can and always will pay our way in our world.”will not be cut from 20p to 19p, with the 1p reduction delayed “indefinitely”, Mr Hunt said, as “it is not right to borrow to fund this tax rate”– introduced in October to help people tackle soaring energy bills over winter – will no longer last two years as previously announced.
He said he shared the “deeply Conservative value that people should keep more of the money that they earn,” but added: “At a time when markets are rightly demanding commitments to sustainable public finances, it is not right to borrow to fund this tax cut.” It is unclear whether the move will be enough to appease Tories calling for the removal of Ms Truss, who was installed as leader by party members despite enjoying only minority support among Tory MPs.
