Liverpool are hopeful of completing a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi - but where else should they then look in transfer window?
The clock continues to tick down towards the transfer deadline and still Liverpool are yet to bring in a new face. The Reds, of course, will hope that changes given their pursuit of Real Sociedad's Spain international Martin Zubimendi.
All summer there have been three positions where the Reds have been actively looking to strengthen - defensive midfield, a wide forward and centre-back. With Joel Matip and Billy Koumetio gone, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams out the picture and Sepp van den Berg increasingly unlikely to have a long-term future at Liverpool, suddenly there aren't that many centre-backs with first-team experience.
Beyond a number six, you could argue they require a new wide-forward and a new centre-back. Yet despite well-documented interest in Anthony Gordon, they would surely need a left-winger to depart first to make a renewed attempt for such a deal. Mohamed Salah remains out of contract next summer and has no natural understudy. A versatile option capable of playing in multiple positions and succeeding the Egyptian when the time comes would be most welcome. In the past the Reds have coped without such a player, due to Salah's freakish availability. But his two-month lay-off last season gave an unwanted glimpse into the future.

But, while defensive midfield might be the Reds' obvious weak spot, I'd argue they need to bolster their backline if they hope to challenge on four fronts again next term.
