Liverpool have been drawn in the same group as Union Saint-Gilloise
One of Liverpool’s Europa League opponents have been barred from signing up to the European Clubs Association.
The reason for Union Saint-Gilloise being unable to join the ECA - which Liverpool rejoined as a member having briefly left in 2021 as part of the 12-team plot to create a breakaway European Super League - is that the Belgian Pro League outfit signed up to the recently launched Union of European Clubs , a much smaller organisation that seeks to gain better representation of smaller clubs outside the European elite.
But due to what the ECA described as a violation of its articles of association, which prohibits clubs from being a member of any other group of clubs which have representation from more than one other UEFA association, Union Saint-Gilloise have seen their membership application rejected. The UEC was backed at its launch by Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish as well as Union Saint-Gilloise part owner Alex Muzio, who sits on the board of the organisation. That membership, and Muzio’s position within it, has led to a rejection of membership of the ECA for the Belgian side.
