Hurricane Idalia made landfall as a Category 3 on Florida’s Big Bend, bringing catastrophic storm surge and flooding. The storm is moving north through Georgia.
Idalia made landfall around 7:45 a.m. Eastern along Florida’s Big Bend, near Keaton Beach, the National Hurricane Center, citing radar data. It tied with an 1896 hurricane as the strongest on record to strike the Big Bend region.
The storm came ashore near low tide, so the surge created less flooding than it would have otherwise. As it moves inland, surrounding winds will continue to push water ashore. The Hurricane Center warned Florida residents to prepare for long power outages and said some locations may be uninhabitable for several weeks or months. Parts of eastern Georgia and southeastern South Carolina also could experience damaging winds.
Officials have reported at least two fatalities, both related to vehicle crashes early Wednesday in stormy conditions, in Florida’s Alachua and Pasco counties.
