Recovery efforts were called off for the night because of conditions around the wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which was hit by a ship in Baltimore.

U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath described during a news conference Thursday the steps necessary to “accomplish our No. 1 priority” of opening the Port of Baltimore, a key trade lane in the city and the nation’s top port for automobile shipments. “Step one of that is we’re going to clear the debris from the channel,” Gilreath said. “Step two is we’re going to remove the vessel, and step three is remove the rest of the bridge debris from the waterway.

However, he said, an assessment process — which is already underway — needs to be completed first so “we can figure out how to cut the bridge in the right size pieces so that we can actually lift them with the crane.” On Thursday, the federal government approved relief funds, which boosted official’s confidence in their ability to successfully accomplish the mission of opening up the port as soon as possible. Yet, Gov. Wes Moore noted, “we have a very long road ahead of us.
