Jim Jordan failed Friday on a third ballot to be elected House speaker after backing off a plan to empower a temporary speaker. Jordan, a conservative firebrand and ally of former president Donald Trump, vowed at a news conference earlier Friday that he would keep fighting for the job.
The House is now in recess, subject to the call of the chair. House Republicans are planning to meet behind closed doors to discuss next steps.
