Beryl is forecast to make landfall in Texas early Monday as at least a Category 1 hurricane. It’s gaining strength in the Gulf after hitting Mexico and Caribbean islands.
Storm surge occurs when strong winds push water inland and pile water against the coast. While Beryl is anticipated to come ashore only as a Category 1 hurricane, the bathymetry, or shape of the sea floor, off the coast of Texas could result in a dangerous surge in some areas. The National Hurricane Center is projecting as much as 4 to 6 feet of storm surge from Matagorda Bay to San Luis Pass.
The agency has issued a storm surge warning from South Padre Island to the Texas-Louisiana border, including Corpus Christi Bay, Matagorda Bay and Galveston Bay. The worst storm surge will be realized near and to the right of Beryl’s center, where the strongest onshore winds are found. It could become a problem as early as Sunday afternoon or evening, even though the storm’s center is still offshore.
