This GOES-16 GeoColor satellite image taken at 4:16 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 5, 2024, and provided by NOAA, shows Hurricane Beryl over Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. is expected to restrengthen into a hurricane on Sunday as it moves to the northwest and approaches the Texas coast.along the western Gulf coast. This will impact where the potential heaviest rain falls and strongest winds set up over the state.
Some Texas coastal cities called for voluntary evacuations in low-lying areas prone to flooding, banned beach camping and urged tourists traveling on the July 4 holiday weekend to move recreational vehicles from coastal parks. As the storm moves west-northwest in the Gulf this weekend, it will encounter more favorable conditions for strengthening. Gulf of Mexico waters are very warm, and there is less wind shear present in the Gulf than what Beryl worked its way through in the Caribbean.
