New York authorities have temporarily closed all live poultry markets in the city and surrounding suburbs due to the detection of seven cases of avian influenza. Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized that this closure is a precautionary measure and there is no immediate threat to public health.
New York authorities ordered the closure of all live poultry markets in the city and some of its suburbs for a week on Friday after the detection of seven cases of avian influenza. The virus has also affected farms nationwide, leading to the slaughter of millions of birds and rising egg prices.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated that there is no immediate threat to public health and that the temporary closure of poultry markets in the city and its suburbs of Westchester and Long Island is a precautionary measure. There have been no detected cases of avian influenza in humans in New York. The order came after infected birds were found during routine inspections of live poultry markets in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens boroughs of New York City. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the virus poses a low risk to the general public. The agency indicated that there have been 67 confirmed cases of avian influenza in humans in the United States, with mild illnesses and primarily detected among agricultural workers who were exposed to sick or dead birds daily. The first death from avian influenza in the United States was reported last month in Louisiana. Authorities stated that the person was over 65 years old, had underlying medical conditions, and had been in contact with sick and dead birds in a domestic flock. In New York, the live poultry markets where the virus was detected must dispose of all birds in a sanitary manner, according to the state order. Other poultry markets without cases will have to sell the remaining birds, clean and disinfect, and then remain closed for at least five days and be inspected by state officials before reopening. The H5N1 strain of avian influenza has been spreading among wild birds, poultry, cows, and other animals. Officials have urged people who come into contact with sick or dead birds to use respiratory and eye protection and gloves when handling poultry. More than 156 million birds nationwide have been affected by the outbreak, many in large agricultural operations that have had to slaughter their entire flocks
