New York has shut down all live poultry markets in New York City, Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk counties after seven bird flu cases detected, said Governor Kathy Hochul on Friday.The shutdown is effective today until February 14 the governor said and means that no poultry can be delivered to those markets.'These are just simply measured, common sense steps that'll curb the spread of bird flu and ultimately keep New York ers safe, which is always my top priority,' Hochul said.
Newsweek has reached out to the New York health department via email for further comment.The U.S. is currently grappling with a significant outbreak of the H5N1 avian influenza virus. Initially affecting wild birds and poultry, the virus has now spread to dairy cattle, with the first cases reported in March 2024.
