As the UIL baseball playoffs start this week, some Dallas-area high school coaches say teams shouldn’t prioritize wins over safety.coach Bryant Lopez used to push his starting pitchers to the limit, challenging them to throw as many as 110 pitches if necessary, the maximum the University Interscholastic League allows in a game.
In the last four years, four South Grand Prairie pitchers have undergone a newer internal brace elbow procedure that takes less time to recover from than Tommy John surgery. One of those was Adrian Najar, a second baseman/pitcher who had the surgery the summer after his junior year, came back and pitched as a senior in 2022, was the district MVP and is now pitching at Navarro College after starting his college career at Texas State.
Chambers is now thriving as a college pitcher after giving up summer ball to take time to rest. He has had no pain since his high school injury, and after pitching at Bossier Parish Community College as a freshman and at Dodge City Community College this year, he has committed to play at Washington State next season.

“I think kids don’t really learn to pitch as much as they just try to throw hard and make pitches move a lot,” Purl said. “Kids ask all the time about getting extra spin and rotation on the ball. They all want to throw a ‘devastating’ slider. Tighter grip puts more strain through the forearm and into the elbow. Additional velocity, training and more stress on the forearm and elbow I think are putting more stress on the elbow specifically.
