A warm air mass is causing ice accumulation and freezing rain across Southcentral Alaska, with up to a glace of ice possible. Winter weather advisories are in place for several areas, including Thompson Pass, where up to 10 inches of snow is expected. The main concern is for very slick roads.
A warm air mass is overriding the colder air, with up to a glace of ice expected for parts of SouthcentralANCHORAGE, Alaska - As warmer air continues to build northward across the state, several locations are expected to see light ice accumulation, with some snow expected in higher elevations. From Southeast to Southwest, freezing rain will be an issue today, with the bigger concern along the Haines Highway.
In addition to the chance for freezing rain, snow and heavy rain, winds will increase across parts of Southcentral today. The greatest winds will occur for coastal regions from Kodiak, through Prince William Sound. It’s possible we could see some winds gusting upwards of 50 mph. Additionally, some gusty winds will develop across Cook Inlet this evening.
Heavy rain today will lead to one to three inches of rain, with the heaviest falling near Ketchikan. That will mean that Ketchikan has the potential to see a foot of rain in just a three-day period. We’ll see rain and areas of ice/snow lighten up this evening, with additional bands of heavy rain arriving through the week. Expect the active and warm weather pattern to remain.
