Urgent warnings were issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday afternoon amid torrential rainfall in the Tar Heel State.

National Weather Service meteorologists in North and South Carolina issued flash flood warnings on Wednesday as torrential rains delivered life-threatening conditions. Why It MattersThe flash flood threat comes amid an unusually rainy and storm-prone pattern in the Carolinas, increasing the danger of flash flooding and urban inundation.

Persistent moisture and slow-moving storms created hazardous conditions with little warning. Flash flooding is recognized as the second-deadliest weather hazard nationwide, particularly when motorists attempt to cross water-covered roadways. The warning comes as AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva told Newsweek that parts of the Eastern Seaboard, including North and South Carolina, could expect a 'wet pattern' beginning Wednesday afternoon as a disturbance moves parallel to the coast. National Hurricane Center meteorologists are currently monitoring the disturbance, but it has yet to strengthen into a tropical storm. What To KnowNWS Raleigh reported that as much as 7 inches of rain had fallen across northeastern Chatham County and northwestern Wake County, with as much as 5 inches having already doused parts of Franklin, Johnston and Nash counties. These amounts led to flash flooding that made several roads impassable.Rain AccumulationAnimated weather footage from windy.com showed that rain accumulation was expected to continue and amount to as much as 5 more inches in some areas over the next three days.Weather RadarAnimated weather radar footage from windy.com shows active storms in North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina as of around 5 p.m. Wednesday ET. Slightly less severe storms stretched farther north into North Carolina and into Virginia as well.Flash flood impacts were observed along multiple creeks and drainages in North Carolina, including Crabtree Creek, Swift Creek, Beaver Creek and Walnut Creek.Flooding affected urban areas, highways, underpasses and other low-lying regions, with the NWS explicitly listing at-risk spots including Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Wake Forest, RDU International Airport, Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville, William B Umstead State Park, Research Triangle Park and portions of Jordan Lake, among others. The observed flood threat was labeled 'considerable,' and rainfall was expected to continue, with forecast rates of up to 1 1/2 inches per hour and additional accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible through the afternoon.Thunderstorm ThreatIn addition to the rain, active thunderstorms were lashing the Carolinas, posing additional hazards such as lightning and strong winds. What People Are SayingNWS Raleigh in a post to X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday afternoon: 'Heavy rain is easing in the central Piedmont, but dangerous flooding continues. The threat is now increasing for the southern/central Coastal Plain, where 2-3' has already fallen. Stay alert!'NWS Raleigh in a flash flood warning: 'Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.'What Happens NextThe NWS warned residents to remain vigilant and continue monitoring official alerts, as more rain is possible. With saturated ground from earlier storms this week and the approach of more moisture, additional flooding is possible. Travelers were strongly advised not to drive through water-covered roads.
