A bread that is sold at several popular retailers across the United States was recalled due to undeclared allergens. Hartford Bakery, Inc. announced July 10 that it would be issuing a voluntary recall for a loaf of bread that was distributed across 12 states, per the U.
S. Food and Drug Administration. The recall affected approximately 883 loaves of bread across six production lots. The FDA requires all companies to identity the presence of any of the nine major food allergens if they are contained in a product, including: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soybeans, tree nuts and wheat. Per Mayo Clinic, food allergy symptoms range from hives, eczema or itching to stomach pain and nausea, as well as trouble breathing. Food allergies can also trigger anaphylaxis, which can cause life-threatening symptoms including constriction of airways, loss of consciousness or swollen throat. Hartford Bakery Inc. recalled six lots of its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf, totaling around 883 loaves. The product, which is packaged in a flexible plastic bag, has a net weight of 12 oz and an expiration date of 7/13/2025 printed on the front panel of the packaging. Additionally, UPC 24126018152 will be printed on the bottom of the package. The recalled loaves will have one of the following lot codes printed on the front of the packaging as well: T10 174010206T10 174010306T10 174010406T10 174020206T10 174020306T10 174020406 Why Was Lewis Bake Shop's Bread Recalled? Hartford Bakery Inc. issued a voluntary recall for its Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf due to undeclared hazelnuts. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that hundreds of the loaves contained visible hazelnuts. The packaging of the product stated “May Contain Tree Nuts,” but did not include “Contains Hazelnuts.” The announcement said that after an investigation, it was revealed that there was an error in the change of packaging. For people who have a nut allergy or sensitivity to hazelnuts, consumption of the product could lead to serious or life-threatening allergic reactions. No reports of injury or illness have been made thus far, but Hartford Bakery, Inc. is aware of one customer who “experienced digestive discomfort” after consuming the recalled product. Additionally, they have received complaints from customers who saw the nuts before they consumed the product. Where Is the Bread Recalled?
