San Diego libraries standing against censorship; national event is from Sept. 18 to 24
a sharp rise in individual book challenges or removals last year with 1,597 — the most since the organization began keeping track more than 20 years ago. Most of the books targeted were about Black or LGBTQ people.
“What I hope, is that this week is going to bring awareness to the general public that this is happening in other states and other cities, even within California,” said Misty Jones, director of the San Diego Public Library, overseeing the Central Library and 35 branches. “And to also bring awareness to how very dangerous this is and what a slippery slope it is.
“Regardless of whether we agree with or not, we cannot tell people that they do not have the right to access that information. That’s what freedom is. That’s what democracy is,” Jones said. “So, we want to bring that awareness the larger community in San Diego, and hopefully they will get involved, speak up, and pay attention to what’s happening in other parts of the country and help us make sure that it does not continue to happen.
