U.S. Open champion is one of 16 of world's top 20 players committed to next month's tournament at Barnes Tennis Center

U.S. Open champion Iga Swiatek, the world’s No. 1-ranked women’s tennis player, heads a strong field announced Wednesday for next month’s San Diego Open WTA 500 tournament at Barnes Tennis Center.

The inaugural event is scheduled for Oct. 8-16 at the Point Loma facility. This will be the first WTA tournament in San Diego County since 2015. Swiatek has won two Grand Slam tournaments this year, adding the U.S. Open to her earlier victory at the French Open. She also won the French in 2020.Swiatek of Poland, Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, Paula Badosa of Spain, Jessica Pegula of the U.S.

“I’m looking forward to playing in San Diego again,” Gauff said in a statement. “I remember playing at Barnes Tennis Center a few years ago during the USTA Girls’ Nationals. It’s a very nice facility and the fans were super supportive.” The tournament will have a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw. A 24-player qualifying draw will be played Oct. 8-9 with the top six advancing to the main draw, which starts Oct. 10. The singles and doubles finals will be played Oct. 16.
