Lexus will lead Toyota's EV push under incoming CEO.

Sato, who currently helms the Lexus brand globally, said on Monday that the time is right for Toyota to ramp up its electric vehicle development programs. He highlighted the importance that electrification will play in our pursuit of a carbon neutral society, and detailed how Toyota will approach this transitional period. The incoming CEO has centered his approach to this challenge around Lexus, not Toyota, leading the charge to market.

“To deliver attractive BEVs to more customers, we must streamline the structure of the car, and with a BEV-first mindset, we must drastically change the way we do business, from manufacturing to sales and service,” said Sato. “Lexus will lead this transformation.” The luxury brand’s first EV on a dedicated platform is slated to arrive later this year by way of thecrossover. That said, the EV’s estimated range figure of just 220 miles puts it far behind current segment competitors. Customers won’t have to wait too long to see improvements however, as Sato confirmed the first batch of next-gen EVs will arrive in 2026 as Lexus-branded products.

Sato further explained that alongside electrification, Toyota will adopt a new focus on intelligence and diversification. This includes the development of new hardware and software systems, as well as a bespoke operating system known as Arene. The OS is expected to arrive sometime around 2025. Toyota will also begin to increase development of region-specific products under Sato’s leadership, which could spawn some exciting machines.
