Gov. Greg Abbott now claims he has the votes to pass school choice, but many readers believe this will hurt public schools.Gov. Greg Abbott and his supporters are pushing to have a voucher system, also known as school choice, which will involve the state matching a percentage of funding for students to go to private schools and another percentage will go to public schools in the state of Texas.I was a proud Texan for most of my 73 years.
This lie is a dangerous one to perpetuate and yet it was used 12 times in your story, including the headline. Parents already have choices: 1. Public education, funded by constitutionally mandated funds budgeted only for that purpose, 2. home school, or 3. private school. These are all good choices in the right context and within my own family we have made different choices. How? Because we already have a choice.
I believe all of the talk about a voucher system taking money from public schools is really a smokescreen for the real fear of the anti-voucher crowd. That is, losing many of their best students with the most involved parents. Typically the “lemon test” ruled by the Supreme Court is threefold. First, the primary purpose of the assistance must be secular. Second, the assistance must neither promote nor inhibit religion. And third, there is no excessive entanglement between church and state.
