Letters to the Editor

Readers have high hopes for the Texas House; defend the federal government; worry about Texas’ public universities; and believe people should support the new administration’s Cabinet choices.Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, shakes hands with Rep. Jeff Leach, R-Plano, after Burrows defeated Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield, in a runoff for speaker during opening day of the 89th regular session at the Texas State Capitol in Austin on Jan. 14, 2025.Wow! The Democrats crossed the aisle.

And many conservatives want to get rid of the IRS, the very agency managing our main source of income to fund the government. Absurd! That tells you their plans for the federal government.I wish instead of piling on you would publish some articles discussing the vital work of the federal government. No doubt it can be streamlined, but to destroy it would be disastrous. What would follow would be chaos and lawlessness.

The Electoral College count is the only one that matters, not the margins of victory. Trump won the 2024 election by almost the same margins that Joe Biden won in 2020: Biden 306-Trump 232. In 2024, the electoral vote was Trump 312-Harris 236. Those are very similar numbers, so I don’t understand the big “to do” now about the need to minimize Trump’s win.I’m going to agree with Sen. John Cornyn: Trump is “entitled to his team.
