Letter to the Editor saying Niles-Maine District Library needs tax levy increase.
Niles-Maine District Library has not been saved. Problems could not be solved by an election alone, and the challenges facing our beloved library persist. For too long, our dedicated library workers have toiled without the security of a contract, while we watch our staff slowly dwindle. There is still no permanent full-time Facilities Manager, several other vacant positions continue to go unfilled, and the library is run by a part-time interim director.
While the trustees ask for more patience, they continue to pay the huge legal bills associated with their strategy of dragging out negotiations with the union. As October 18th approaches, another monthly board meeting looms with no resolution on a union contract. This meeting, where the annual tax levy is discussed and voted upon, will be pivotal. Over the past two years, the levy has been reduced significantly, and now, it demands an increase.
