Readers are hopeful about the focus on discipline in the Dallas ISD; can’t believe the Police and Fire pensions are still in trouble; and don’t support school vouchers.Re: “Ending suspensions works for Dallas ISD — ‘Reset centers’ get more students back into class and out of trouble,” by Ben Mackey and Joe Carreón, Monday Opinion.As a retired educator, I am heartened by Dallas ISD’s proposed changes to its discipline policy.
Based on the attrition rate for teachers over the last five years, it appears the issue of discipline is still a worsening problem. Data and comments from teacher exit interviews as they resign or retire would also be informative.Re: “Pension returns among lowest — Members question fund’s management, citing low rate over decade, loss of value,” June 8 Metro & Business story.has been reporting on this dating back to the 2008 financial crisis.
This is an immense disservice to the Dallas police and fire personnel who risk their lives to improve our own and I implore the Dallas City Council to take the necessary immediate steps to address the issue once and for all.In this letter to the editor, a writer suggested desalination as a solution to Texas’ growing water supply problem. Desalination at this time requires a huge amount of energy and presents problems with damage to marine life near the desalination plant.
Conservation of water has worked for generations in our water-starved neighbors to the west. When there’s money to be made in desalination, I believe Texas will lead the way.Re: “Faculty wrongly blamed when protests erupt — Professors aren’t indoctrinating students, despite what you hear,” by Jill DeTemple, Wednesday Opinion.
