Eric Gay, STF / Associated PressSo, let’s see, we are going to take tax money and give it to parents to send their kids to a private school, at $8,000 a pop. The majority of private schools are religious . This means the state is using tax money, calling it a voucher, and giving to a church. That violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which provides for separation of church and state.
We must not abandon public schools, which provide every child, rich or poor, with a foundation. If our schools are failing, it’s because they have been underfunded for decades. They need more support, not less.Re: “Tenure, free thought are being threatened in Texas,” Another View, April 5: The author states that tenure preserves the “right to free speech and inquiry.” Instead, we are seeing the absence of free speech and inquiry at our universities. What a fantastic way to save tax dollars. No need for prosecutors, jury trials or judges. Just leave the entire process in Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s hands. It seems as though that’s what our esteemed governor has done.While U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, struggles to find any meaningful issues that he can label as weaponization of the federal government, I would invite him to Texas where he’ll find a plethora of examples to witness weaponization at its finest.
