A reader offer his opinion on staging duelling protests over gender identity in schools at the Vimy Memorial in Kiwanis Park in Saskatoon.
Protesters and counter-protesters over school pronoun policy gather at the Vimy Memorial in Kiwanis Park along Saskatoon’s riverbank Wednesday. Photo taken in Saskatoon, Sask. on Sept. 20, 2023.Regarding the protests and counter protests that took place on Wednesday at the Vimy Memorial in Kiwanis Park in Saskatoon, I want to encourage people not to gather there for political protests and certainly not to deface the grounds with graffiti.
The people who gathered there on Wednesday trampled flowers and defaced the memorial with graffiti in chalk. It is disgraceful and many people ought to feel ashamed. It does not matter what side of an issue you fall on, your protests can be done somewhere else. There were politicized slogans written and flags drawn on the pavement surrounding about 60 per cent of the memorial and some actually on it, up the stairs and under the rotunda. Someone also left a bag of chalk for people to write more if they wished, which I threw away when I visited Wednesday evening.
Also Pride magnets were left around the steps, presumably for people to take, and Pride stickers were actually placed on the monument. A fair amount of garbage was left too. I went there with some buckets of water and my broom Thursday morning and it tidied it up as best I could, and removed as much garbage as I could see.
