MOBILE, Ala. — A bit of St. Patrick’s Day fun turned into a lifesaving effort in Mobile on Tuesday, as community members rolled up their sleeves for the Leprechaun-A-Thon blood drive. Held at New Horizons Credit Union on Airport Boulevard, the event— in partnership with NBC 15 and New Horizons Credit Union—welcomed donors from 11 a.
m. to 4 p.m. to help address an ongoing need for blood supplies along the Gulf Coast. Festive green outfits, high spirits, and even a special appearance by the Crichton Leprechaun helped draw attention to the cause. American Red Cross Communications Director Annette Rowland emphasized that behind the holiday-themed fun is a serious and constant demand for donations. According to Rowland, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. They say while that statistic may seem abstract, it becomes personal when imagining a loved one in need of a transfusion after an emergency. They encouraged those who are eligible—especially first-time donors—to consider giving blood, noting that events like this are a great opportunity to get involved. Another key challenge is timing. Blood has a limited shelf life of thirty days, meaning supplies must be continuously replenished to ensure hospitals have what they need. Organizers work to distribute donations efficiently so they are used before expiring, sometimes shipping blood to areas of highest demand across the country. Even a single donation can help save multiple lives, organizers said, making every donor’s contribution critical. For those who missed Tuesday’s event, opportunities to give are still available. Residents can visit RedCrossBlood.org to find nearby blood drives or schedule an appointment. Weekly donation opportunities are also offered at a local office on Sage Avenue.Organizers hope the festive St. Patrick’s Day event inspires more people to donate year-round and help keep lifesaving supplies readily available.Families across Lawrence County, Tennessee are beginning the difficult process of cleaning up and rebuilding after severe storms tore through the area Sunday niUPDATE : The Mobile County Sheriff's Office have identified the victim of the homicide and announced 4 arrests in the case.
