Regulators ordered the Homerton Fertility Centre in east London (pictured) to suspend services after being warned that 153 embryos from 45 women may not survive the freezing process.
A leading NHS fertility clinic was forced to close down and report itself to the police after fears that over 150 embryos have been destroyed.
An incident report detailing four cases where embryos went missing suggested that contamination, the use of 'experimental techniques', and equipment blunders may have contributed to failure of freezing processes. 'This has resulted in the tragic loss of a small number of embryos either not surviving or being undetectable altogether.'
Staff at the Fertility Centre are now required to work in pairs with another health professional to improve accountability. Peter Thompson, chief executive of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority said that the suspension with immediate effect was due to 'significant concerns about the clinic.'
The crisis for the centre comes after two NHS fertility clinics told patients last month that a faulty solution had been used on their embryos, putting them at risk of being unviable
