Nathan Williams, a criminal defense attorney, was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the Duval County Jail using legal paperwork laced with synthetic marijuana.

A criminal defense attorney is behind bars after he was accused of using his professional access to smuggle drug-soaked papers into the Duval County Jail. According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO), Nathan Williams was arrested on Sunday. He was booked on counts of giving drugs to an inmate, giving or receiving communication from an inmate, conspiracy to introduce controlled substances into the jail and unlawful use of a communication device.

Officers with JSO believe that Williams coordinated with inmates and their families to smuggle legal paperwork laced with synthetic marijuana in exchange for money. Williams' arrest stems from a long-term investigation, Operation Stamp Collection, that targeted illegal drug flow in the Duval County Jail. Officers say since February of 2024, the sheriff's office has made 21 arrests related to smuggling or attempting to smuggle drugs into the facility. Police say the investigation was launched to address the overdoses in correctional facilities, which resulted in a 61% reduction in overdoses at the Duval County Jail. The sheriff's office sites in the Duval County Jail there were 23 drug overdoses in 2023 and nine overdoses in 2024
