A criminal defense attorney was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the Duval County Jail using legal documents.
A criminal defense attorney has been arrested for allegedly using his professional access to smuggle drug-infused documents into the Duval County Jail. Nathan Williams was taken into custody on Sunday by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) and faces charges including giving drugs to an inmate, communicating with an inmate, conspiracy to introduce controlled substances into the jail, and unlawful use of a communication device.
Authorities believe Williams collaborated with inmates and their families to sneak legal paperwork laced with synthetic marijuana into the jail in exchange for money. Williams' arrest is the result of a long-term investigation, Operation Stamp Collection, which focused on curbing illegal drug trafficking within the Duval County Jail. Since February 2024, the sheriff's office has made 21 arrests related to smuggling or attempting to smuggle drugs into the facility. The investigation was initiated to address a concerning rise in overdoses at correctional facilities, which has reportedly led to a 61% reduction in overdoses at the Duval County Jail. The sheriff's office states there were 23 drug overdoses in 2023 and nine overdoses in 2024 within the jail
