Among those testifying was Representative Brandon Guffey who lost his son to suicide in 2022, after being contacted by a predator online. "Gavin was contacted on Instagram around midnight, in which he told his friends that he would jump off the game to chat with her. In just one hour and 40 minutes, my son was gone," Guffey said.was at the hearing. She says lawmakers discussed social media accountability, adding federal regulations to online platforms, and exploring how artificial intelligence is being used to extort children. "Our kids are being harmed at an unprecedented rate with 36.2 million reports to NCMEC last year," Griffin said. Another big focus, reforming Section 230 of the Communications Act, which Griffin tells us protects social media companies from abuses committed by third-party actors on their platforms. "Because of this immunity, victims' rights lawyers are not even able to get to the discovery phase, to see what's underneath the hood," said Griffin.which would allow victims of child social abuse online to sue companies that host the material.
