A law enforcement car that was part of the squad protecting Vice President J.D. Vance in California over the weekend was accidentally hit by an artillery shell, according to police. The incident took place Saturday during military display celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
according to the news outlet AxiosThe incident happened along I-5 close to Camp Pendleton where a demonstration was taking place on the freeway and traffic was halted. Metal shrapnel from an explosive ordnance was fired onto the freeway prematurely and struck the patrol vehicle.said in a statement“It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway. As a Marine myself, I have tremendous respect for our military partners, but my foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of the people of California and the officers who protect them.”California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom weighed in on the situation, arguing that the White House was “reckless.” “We love our Marines and owe a debt of gratitude to Camp Pendleton, but next time, the Vice President and the White House shouldn’t be so reckless with people’s lives for their vanity projects,” he wrote on X.
