Tony Abbott has publicly backed calls from Peter Dutton for a total ban on humanitarian visas for Palestinians over national security concerns.

Tony Abbott has called the Albanese government’s decision to grant refugee visas to Gaza ns “just wrong” and backed calls from Peter Dutton for a “blanket ban” on arrivals from the war-torn region.

“I don’t think people should be coming in from that warzone at all at the moment,” Mr Dutton told Sky News Australia. “The last thing we need right now is to be importing more trouble from overseas,” he told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin on Wednesday evening. “This idea that you show compassion to the people of Gaza at the expense of the safety of the people of Australia is just wrong,” he said.Last week, ASIO chief general Mike Burgess raised Australia’s national terrorism threat level from “possible” to “probable” for the first time in a decade.
