Tony Abbott has accused the Labor Party of “consistently turning a blind eye” to lawlessness in the building industry, claiming the latest allegations about the CFMEU puts Prime Minster Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan “on trial”.

Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan have been put"on trial" by the latest claims about the CFMEU , with Tony Abbott questioning whether they"have the guts" to reign in the rogue union.

The reporting also revealed the existence of kick back schemes to CFMEU members, and how officials from the union – including the now former Victorian secretary John Setka – had engaged in bullying, intimidation and stand-over tactics. “Effectively, the Labor Party has been running a long-term protection racket for the most crooked union in the country,” he said.

“It's now the Premier and the Prime Minister who are on trial. Do they have the guts to rein in this union, which has behaved in an un-Australian way for decades?” It falls short of former prime minister Bob Hawke’s decision to deregister the CFMEU’s precursor union, the Builders and Labourers Federation, following similar evidence of misconduct.

She said evidence of criminal activities were referred to police, but she did concede the allegations about misconduct on state infrastructure projects were not acted on quickly enough.
