The Los Angeles Police Department has pulled its units from providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris following criticism from the police union. The union argued that taxpayer money should not be spent on protecting a wealthy former politician. The California Highway Patrol has since stepped in to provide security.

"Pulling police officers from protecting everyday Angelenos to protect a failed presidential candidate who also happens to be a multi-millionaire, with multiple homes and who can easily afford to pay for her own security, is nuts," the Los Angeles Police Protective League Board of Directors said in a statement. "The mayor should tell Governor Newsom that if he wants to curry favor with Ms. Harris and her donor base then he should open up his own wallet because LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness."Following the news on Saturday that the Los Angeles Police Department had dropped the protection, the board issued a second statement. “Every now and then common-sense prevails and we are happy to report that the Metro officers assigned to protect the multi-millionaire failed presidential candidate are back on the street fighting crime."The Los Angeles CHP said, "The California Highway Patrol has the statutory authority to provide for the physical security of any current or former constitutional officer of the State of California when a threat analysis supports that need. Former Vice President Kamala Harris is a former state constitutional officer, and the CHP is coordinating and providing security to meet the current concerns."
