United States Air Force officials have now officially disclosed more intel on drone swarm attacks on Langley Air Force Base last year.observed at Langley Air Force Base varied in number, size, and configuration. This indicates that various unmanned aerial systems were involved in the incidents.
The response involved deploying specialized assets such as NASA’s WB-57F high-altitude research aircraft, highlighting the concern and need for capabilities to monitor or counteract drone activities.“The installation first observed UAS activities the evening of December 6 and experienced multiple incursions throughout December. The number of UASs fluctuated and ranged in size/configuration,” Langley Air Force Base spokesperson told .
Various US government assets, including NASA and other federal agencies, coordinated a response to the drones. This indicates a level of concern that suggests the drones were not simply hobbyist or commercially operated systems.highlights the evolving challenge drones present to both military and critical civilian infrastructure, as well as the need for effective countermeasures.
The U.S. Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command are now also assessing how to address better the emerging threats posed by unmanned aerial systems .“To protect operational security, we do not discuss impacts to operations,” the statement added. “We don’t discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation.
Langley Air Force Base is located in southeastern Virginia and is officially a part of Joint Base Langley-Eustis, including the US Army’s Fort Eustis. The base is home to F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, making it important to support NORAD and NORTHCOM’s missions to defend the US homeland, including protecting the nation’s capital in Washington, DC.No country has claimed responsibility for the drones yet.
