A new method of examining gene expression patterns called landscape transcriptomics has the potential to shed light on the stressors affecting bumble bee populations. This innovative approach, pioneered by researchers at Penn State, involves analyzing the gene expression profiles of individual bees to identify signatures indicative of specific stressors. The study, published in the journal, marks the first application of landscape transcriptomics in the wild.

The team hypothesized that by examining the genetic makeup of wild bees, they could pinpoint the environmental factors causing stress and ultimately contribute to understanding the decline in bee populations globally. They employed machine learning algorithms to analyze RNA samples collected from bumble bees both in the laboratory and in natural environments. The results demonstrated that landscape transcriptomics accurately identified genetic signatures associated with stressors like extreme heat and cold. Lead researcher Gabriela Quinlan, who conducted the study during her postdoctoral fellowship at Penn State, emphasized the significance of these findings. She stated that landscape transcriptomics holds immense promise for accelerating conservation efforts for threatened species. The study not only validated the effectiveness of this novel approach but also provided valuable insights into the specific genes associated with different stressors in bumble bees. Christina Grozinger, Publius Vergilius Maro Professor of Entomology and director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, likened landscape transcriptomics to forensic biology, where gene expression patterns serve as a fingerprint revealing the organism's exposure to specific stressors. Grozinger highlighted the advantage of this method over traditional approaches, which often require extensive sample collection and analysis over prolonged periods.
