A newly-opened day center offers a respite from the heat with air conditioning, cold water and snacks.
A Lancaster City-based nonprofit organization is taking big steps to help men and women experiencing homelessness during the current heat wave . Anchor Lancaster , headquartered at 26 East Walnut Street, launched its year-round Day Center a day earlier than expected to accommodate neighbors living on the streets in Monday's heat. The new year-round Monday through Friday program was supposed to be unveiled Tuesday. The Day Center offers a respite from the heat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
In addition to the Day Center, Anchor Lancaster has been serving what’s known as Anchor Breakfast for more than eight years. It begins at 8 a.m. and feeds anywhere between 115 and 175 people each weekday. Anchor Lancaster’s Walnut Street location also has showers that are available first thing in the morning at 6 a.m. and again after breakfast at 10 a.m. Organizers hope that a shower and a meal help those living on the streets feel refreshed and ready to start a new day.
