Officers from the Environment Agency have today attended the River Irwell and Whitewell Brook. They have been tasked with taking water samples to 'determine the cause and understand the source'.

The agency told LancsLive that it is unable to any provide further details at this stage as the investigation is still ongoing. They are urging members of the public to any report signs of pollution to their 24-hour hotline.In a tweet this morning, Environment Agency shared a picture of an officer conducting a water test in the river. They said: "Our officers are out on the River Irwell and Whitewell Brook this morning investigating reports of pollution near Rawtenstall.

In a statement, the Environment Agency told LancsLive: "We have deployed officers to the River Irwell today to investigate reports of pollution in the river near Rawtenstall, Lancashire. Our officers will be taking water samples to determine the cause and understand the source. "We would urge members of the public to report signs of pollution to our 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060."
