In a three-team trade orchestrated on Wednesday night, the Lakers sent 23-year-old wing Dalton Knecht , Cam Reddish, a 2031 unprotected first-round pick, and a 2030 pick swap to the Hornets in exchange for Williams. This deal comes on the heels of the Lakers ' recent unsuccessful pursuit of Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks.
While the Doncic trade ultimately fell through, the Lakers utilized assets that weren't initially part of that deal to secure Williams. Sources indicate that the Lakers GM Rob Pelinka skillfully negotiated with Mavericks GM Nico Harrison, managing to reduce Harrison's initial demands during their three-week dialogue. Knecht, a rookie from the University of Tennessee, had shown glimpses of offensive potential while playing alongside LeBron James.
