On Thursday at 4 a.m. the National Weather Service issued a lake effect snow warning valid from Friday midnight until Saturday 10 a.m. for Northern Erie and Southern Erie as well as Crawford County.
"Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 18 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph," comments the weather service. "Winds will shift to the southwest on Saturday and push heavy snow away from the region for a period. Lake effect snow is likely to return across the area on Sunday into early next week and bring additional snowfall. Additional winter weather headlines may be needed to address this next round of snow.
"A multi-day lake effect snow event off Lake Erie will begin tonight and bring periodic heavy snow to the region. These heavy lake effect snow bands will bring occasional 1 to 2 inch per hour snowfall rates and poor visibility, as low as one quarter of a mile, which will make travel difficult to impossible, especially along Interstates 90, 86, and 79.
