With a relatively dry autumn season, water levels are down on all of the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams.
Fishing Guide Michael “Moke” Mochan of Strikemaster Charters took advantage of the outstanding Lake Erie steelhead trout fishing this week in the near-shore waters of the Cleveland area to catch and release this trophy fish.CLEVELAND, Ohio — The brisk southerly winds along the Ohio coastline and a lack of a typical autumn gully-washer have changed the fishing dynamics of central Lake Erie this week.
“We just like to fish, and catching and releasing a bunch of high-flying steelhead trout at this time of year is a real bonus to our fun season,” said Mochan . “We’re still taking out a few fishermen, and it’s a bonus because we don’t have to go very far to find big pods of trout — and usually a few walleye.”
It’s in the DNA of the trout to stage around the river mouths right now, even though conditions aren’t in their favor to move upriver. And the crowds of walleye already feeding on near-shore shad and baitfish, as well as hungry smallmouth bass, has created a fishing bonanza. The piers at the mouth of the Grand River have been productive in recent days, and the Lorain and Sandusky piers have been busy.
