Labour election leaflet that left Tory councillor in tears didn't break the law, police confirm
Lancashire Constabulary has officially confirmed that a controversial Labour election leaflet which left an 81-year-old Conservative councillor in tears did not break the law.
Darwen South candidate Cllr Lillian Salton’s agent Cllr Julie Slater complained about the poll literature produced in the run up to Thursday’s local elections. It said ‘unknown Tory councillors take the expenses without putting in the work’. Cllr Slater alleged this was an unjustified slur on Cllr Salton and made an official complaint to the the police. But Cllr Matt Jackson, agent for Labour’s candidate Anthony Shaw, has said the leaflet does not refer to Cllr Salton but to former ward councillor Andrew Walker, originally elected as a Conservative who was suspended by the party and sat as an independent before being disqualified for failing to attend council meetings.
Cllr John Slater, the leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Conservative group said: “We are obviously disappointed. We remain concerned about the content of this leaflet.” Cllr Jackson welcomed the police decision and said: “I’d now like to draw a line underneath all this gutter politics from the Tories and focus on the good people of Darwen South. This complaint was a failed desperate attempt to besmudge the work I have done as a Labour councillor in Darwen South in the short time since being elected and the potential of getting twice as much achieved if Anthony Shaw is successful.
