La-Z-Boy's new campaign argues against reclining airplane seats, highlighting the reasons why it's become a controversial practice.
An ad campaign by furniture company La-Z-Boy says you shouldn't recline your seat while flying. The campaign, launched in late November, features a video highlighting the reasons why reclining has fallen out of favor in recent years. The tongue-in-cheek campaign, known for its plush, oversized reclining chairs, tackles the increasingly contentious issue of seat reclining.
Opinions on the practice generally fall into two camps: those who say don't do it, and those who argue the recline button exists for a reason. A third, more nuanced position accepts reclining on long-haul or night flights. La-Z-Boy's campaign firmly places the company in the 'never recline' camp, stating that 'just because you can doesn't mean you should.' Another video in the campaign shows how one reclined seat can affect the entire aircraft, like a domino effect. A 2023 survey of 18 markets by YouGov found that attitudes toward seat reclining vary by region, with Europeans being the least tolerant. The survey also revealed that flyers from the UAE were generally less bothered by in-flight behaviors, including personal grooming and noisy children, except for public displays of affection, which they deemed unacceptable at higher rates than those from Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific.
