It’s unknown whether Houston’s makeshift front office kept the policy in place. Assistant general managers Bill Firkus, Charles Cook and Andrew Ball are running day-to-day operations in the wake of Click’s departure following the World Series. Both Javier and Tucker are logical candidates for long-term contract extensions. That the Astros could not find common ground for a 2023 salary is at least somewhat foreboding for future negotiations but not at all a deal-breaker.
All-Star starter Framber Valdez agreed to a $6.8 million salary, more than doubling his $3 million earnings from last season. The $3.8 million increase is believed to be the largest ever for a non-Cy Young winner going from his first to second year of arbitration eligibility.
