Three arbitration-eligible Astros merit consideration for long-term deals
Lefthander Framber Valdez, left, and right fielder Kyle Tucker are among eight Astros eligible for arbitration this winter. Players and teams are due to exchange figures Friday.Another offseason rite is near for the Astros’ makeshift front office. Owner Jim Crane parted ways with general manager James Click in November. Two months later, little is known about Crane’s search for a replacement.
The site projects Valdez will earn $7.4 million, while Tucker will get $5.6 million after making the league minimum last season. Discussions during the salary exchange deadline can, at the very least, open dialogue for a deal beyond 2023, making Friday a fascinating day for both men. The two homegrown All-Stars are primed for substantial raises from their 2022 salaries and the sorts of players with whom Houston could explore a longer partnership.
Such a successful season — and the promise of an even better one this year — gives Tucker and his representatives at Excel Sports Management massive leverage. Few players stand to benefit more from the elimination of defensive shifts than Tucker, who saw a shift during 550 of his 605 plate appearances last season, according to Baseball-Savant.
Tucker must factor the sport-wide spending frenzy this winter, when it seemed like long-term deals were doled out almost daily. The latest went to a 26-year-old two-time All-Star with a 15.8 career bWAR, an .854 career OPS and one year left before free agency. Rafael Devers parlayed it into an 11-year, $331 million extension with the Boston Red Sox.
