Kristen Bell and Joy Bryant have requested that those donating to people who have been impacted by the fires in Los Angeles 'don't send trash.'
Kristen Bell and fellow actor Joy Bryant have requested that those donating to people who have been impacted by the fires in Los Angeles 'don't send trash.' Newsweek emailed Bell and Bryant for comment on Monday outside of normal working hours. California continues to battle multiple wildfires that have destroyed thousands of homes. The Pacific Palisades fire has been roaring through Los Angeles County, spreading throughout the region spurred by powerful Santa Ana winds.
At the time of writing, it is only 13 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Two other blazes, the Eaton fire and the Hurst fire, are also currently active in the region. They have been 33 percent and 89 percent contained, respectively. Strong Santa Ana winds and low humidity are expected to keep fanning the flames in Southern California through Wednesday. Amidst the destruction, people have been donating items to those in need. Now Bell and Bryant have requested that people be more thoughtful about their donations. 'This is Kristen and Joy coming at ya semi-live,' Bell said in a video she uploaded to her Instagram account. 'So we went, we're in LA and we went and volunteered yesterday at one of the donation centers and it was very cool to see everyone coming together but we noticed something that we kind of thought through and think we should share.' Bryant said: 'Yeah, people need a lot of things, including clothes and all kinds of things, but when we—we noticed that in the sorting of everything, we found stuff that were damaged or stained and people don't need that.' Bell said: 'Garbage, we found some garbage, basically. So we just wanted to remind everyone when you're giving things, if you wouldn't give it to your best friend, maybe don't give it. Just because we want to be as respectful and dignified as possible.' The Good Place star requested that if people are donating clothes and blankets, they wash and sort them first. The actor stressed that everything donated should be in good shape, including children's toys. 'If you're donating, like, you know, old toys or anything, maybe make sure all the parts are there, wipe it down, so people that are coming to get items that their family needs, they don't feel like they're picking up something dirty or used,' Bell said. 'Yeah, don't send trash,' Bryant shared, to which Bell added: 'Just don't send trash, that's really like the basic—so if this is helpful, use it. If it's not, ignore us.' In the caption of the post, Bell wrote: 'Remember as you are gathering donations: 1. New, or gently used and clean items only 2. Organize into sizes and label into sizes.'What People Are Saying Bell's husband, Dax Shepard—who starred as Bryant's husband in the TV series Parenthood—shared his support on the post, writing: 'Real Wife and TV Wife making an impossibly good duo.' However, other commenters were divided. Some people said that they were doing the best they could, with one person writing: 'News flash most of us wear items that are torn or dirty. We can't afford clothes with the price of groceries and gas and everything else.' 'I totally get that and don't think people should donate stained or ripped clothes...but also as I was going through my closet I thought if I was in that situation I would wear semi-old sneakers or old jeans (as long as washed!) especially to get through these first horrible weeks. I would wear a random mickey mouse tee. If I had nothing and my kids had nothing I wouldn't care about an older random hoodie. Just my 2 cents,' said another. 'I'm not trying to attack you in any way....but....your two families have been blessed because of your hard work and dedication to your craft. Not everyone has the resources you guys/gals do. So they try to help the best they can. With the resources that they have. Someone from let's say Indiana that makes 30K a year and donated clothes or bedding to some less fortunate is somehow a less person?' a third user asked. The majority of comments thanked Bell and Bryant for the video, saying that this was a message that needed to be shared. Many highlighted that those struggling still deserve 'dignity.' 'Love this PSA! Great guidelines for anytime you're donating items. I love the comment about thinking about the dignity of others,' one person wrote in response to the comment: 'Yes!!! People in need deserve dignity and respect.' 'This may not land well with everyone, but it needed to be said. Thank you for sharing this!' someone else commented. Another person added: 'I LOVE y'all! Sadly, this is necessary advice. Thank you for posting this! Also, the people in need don't need the added stress to find a washer & dryer or sanitary wipes to clean toys.'What Happens Next Critical fire weather conditions will persist through midweek as the Santa Ana winds intensif
