A month-long awareness campaign on knife crime has seen 70 potentially deadly weapons seized by police across Leeds. The campaign, linked to the imposing Knife Angel sculptures visit to the city, has seen hard-hitting messages on knife crime delivered to thousands of young people across the city. A knife surrender was held during the final week which, along with a pilot scheme by the Force’s Contact Management Centre to recover knives found by members of the public, saw 70 potentially deadly blades taken off the streets.

A knife surrender was held during the final week which, along with a pilot scheme by the Force’s Contact Management Centre to recover knives found by members of the public, saw 70 potentially deadly blades taken off the streets. A comprehensive programme of activity to tackle knife crime ran throughout February following the arrival of the 27ft tall sculpture, created from over 100,000 seized blades by the British Ironwork Centre, to the Royal Armouries Museum. The month also officially kickstarted Project Shield, which is the city’s longer term co-ordinated response to knife crime, based on a more positive and hopeful conversation with young people
