Kenyan set 5K road record at Carlsbad in 2019
The last time Ed Cheserek was in town the Kenyan could have been arrested for speeding. He zipped parallel to the beach so fast he set a world 5-kilometer road record in winning the 2019 Carlsbad 5000 in 13 minutes, 29 seconds.
Billed as The World’s Fastest 5K, the Carlsbad 5000 has been in lockdown by COVID since Cheserek’s win. Come Sunday, 1,141 days after it was last staged, the race returns, and so will Cheserek. Cheserek darted off to the University of Oregon where he won 17 NCAA championships, including three in cross country and five outdoors on the track, two in the 5,000, three in the 10,000.While Cheserek’s amateur days were stunning, his professional career has been noted for its inconsistency.
Yet later that year he finished second at England’s Great North Run, the largest half-marathon in the world.
