Instead of selling food for buka puasa at her stall in Jalan Cermat hawker centre, Taman Maju Jaya here, she is keeping busy preparing meals to be given for free to foreign workers and the less fortunate.“My customers know my timing and come at about that time to buy food. This year, I have been closed since the movement control order was first imposed on March 18 due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Rozita, 59.
“I vary the food served, like chicken and mutton briyani, chicken rice, nasi ayam penyet and bubur lambuk.Another person providing free food at his restaurant since the MCO started is Sarvani Caterers owner K. Paranjothi, 48.“At one point, due to demand, my workers and I were preparing some 650 food packs a day.”“The meals cost about RM2,500 a day. People of all races come to take the food packs,” he said, adding that the initiative was his way of helping those in need during the MCO.
“Sometimes, I deliver the food to the needy who are unable to come and collect, such as those from Bukit Indah, Rosmerah and Plentong,” he said. Paranjothi, who has been operating the restaurant for the past 15 years, said initially he planned to stop the service at the end of the MCO on May 12 but now plans to go on serving till the extension of the order until June 9.“I hope they will be able to fend for themselves,” he said.
He said some of his friends and business contacts who learnt about his free meals for the needy had come forward to help.“Their generosity helped me carry on helping the needy,” said Paranjothi.
