As the Osage people cope with the attacks, the ensemble cast relies on love, treachery, and murder to avoid facing many true consequences.
The captivating Killers of the Flower Moon is already a serious box office draw. Variety reports that the movie made $23 million domestically over the weekend and added $21 million internationally. It is Scorsese's biggest opening since he and DiCaprio teamed up for 2010's Shutter Island, which earned $41 million in its domestic opening. It also falls behind The Departed, which brought in $26 million domestically.
Killers Of The Flower Moon Beat The Odds Despite being led by a proven director, Killers of the Flower Moon could have easily struggled at the box office. Pit against the steep competition of Taylor Swift's concert movie, it could have failed to draw much attention with its release. It doesn't help that media coverage has been completely revolving around Swift ever since she recently began attending Kansas City Chiefs football games.
Another mark against Scorsese's latest movie is the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The cast of Killers of the Flower Moon has been completely unable to promote the project, thanks to the rules of the strike. With esteemed actors, including DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, and Louis Cancelmi rounding out the cast, this is a production would have benefitted from the promotional circuit to truly achieve its potential.
Fortunately, Flower Moon has succeeded in spite of the many factors working against it. Its opening weekend has far exceeded other Scorsese projects, including The Wolf of Wall Street and Hugo, which respectively earned $18.3 million and $11 million domestically. It remains to be seen if Scorsese's newest movie will continue to draw audiences in future weeks, but the opening weekend of Killers of the Flower Moon has undoubtedly been a success.
